Students from the College gave a young persons perspective on the recent “Bernie” initiative at a conference held in the Glamorgan Building of University of Cardiff today ( 23.1.2011)

Jessica, Laura, Zoe,  Mark and Jack gave a packed audience  an informative insight into their personal experience of the project and why they were proud to wear the “Bernie Hoodie. This was  followed by a over view of the Colleges perspective of the project from Mrs Julie Atkins.

“Bernie”  a social marketing project ran for six weeks over the Easter period of 2010, the aim being to reduce deliberate grass fires in the Tonypandy area.  309 young people accessed a variety of activities from Graffiti to Pottery and Bush Craft to Firefighter For The Day gaining many new skills.

The pilot project was a great sucess with a 74% reduction in deliberate grass fires in Tonypandy,  when compared to figures collated over theprevious five years.

In fact the project has been so sucessful that South Wales Fire Service intend to run the ” Bernie” again during  Easter 2011 over an additional 4 monitory authorities in South Wales working with an  additional 13 secondary schools.

Congratulations to all involved.
