A group of budding broadcasters from Tonypandy Community College are visiting the Principality Stadium this week for an innovative media course.

Rugby pundit Sean Holley has teamed up with the Principality Business Partnership’s Aspire2Be Education Technology programme on the three-day pilot project which aims to boost literacy, digitisation and numeracy skills in young people.

Six students from the College have joined groups from four other Welsh comprehensive schools to learn interview techniques, scriptwriting, filming and how to analyse rugby matches.

At the culmination of the visit they will use their new skills to prepare and present a mock Scrum 5 sports panel show.

Principality Building Society teamed up with Tonypandy Community College a year ago through Business Class, a programme which partners businesses with schools for mutual benefit.

Working together over the course of three years, Principality and Tonypandy Community College are carrying out financial education and employability skills activities as well as collaborating with teachers on curriculum support and resources.

Headteacher Nathan Prygodzicz said: “This is a very exciting opportunity for our students and we are delighted to participate in such an innovative project.

“Students will have the opportunity to develop their interviewing, presenting and commentating techniques whilst enhancing their filming and editing expertise using the latest digital applications.

“We look forward to seeing the culmination of their work when they create a mock programme at the end of the week which will hopefully inspire a passion for a career in the media ahead.”

The project is being organised by a new initiative called iBroadcast which immerses students in the world of televised sport, through a series of sessions that promote communication, collaboration and presentation.

Each unit will help students to find their inner voice by challenging them to create their very own sports show.

As well as achieving core Literacy and Numeracy objectives, it will provide students with an opportunity to enhance their Digital Competency skills in a fun and engaging context.

Students will benefit from expert knowledge and experience in order to analyse and sculpt their own presentation style.
