Dear Parent

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that following seven immensely enjoyable years as Headteacher of Tonypandy Community College, I have made the difficult decision to retire from the teaching profession this summer.

I joined the teaching staff at Tonypandy almost 20 years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the College, making many lifelong friends along the way.

As Headteacher I have been fortunate to work with some exceptional governors, staff, students and parents who have made me feel proud of their respect for each other, their positive attitudes and determination to improve in everything they do.

As I reflect on my time at Tonypandy, I am delighted to be able to say that we achieved far more than we ever expected. The College continues to go from strength to strength and although we can be justifiably proud of those achievements, we must never rest on our laurels and continue to strive to succeed.

Academically we recently received the highest examination results in the history of the College, a fact acknowledged by PiXl, the country’s largest partnership of schools. I am also pleased to announce that we have also been re-categorised by the local authority to a more relevant 3cAmber which again displays our ongoing success and aspirations for the future. Be assured that planning is being undertaken to ensure that the effective leadership of the College will be maintained to continue our rapid progress.

The improvement in performance has been incredibly exciting and reputationally the College plays a positive and active role in community life and events.

During my time as Headteacher I have enjoyed one of the most rewarding journeys of my career but feel the time is right to embark on a new chapter in my life.

Many major changes will take place in the secondary education system in the local authority and the time is right for a new Headteacher to take the helm.

Following a 35-year career in education and with the retirement of my husband Paul, we would both like to enjoy more time together with our boys and friends.

Finally may I take this opportunity to thank governors, staff, parents and students both past and present wholeheartedly for their continuous support, commitment and friendship throughout my time here.

It has been an utter privilege to have been the custodian of Tonypandy Community College and to have had the opportunity to share the journey with you.

A meeting will be scheduled over the next few weeks to offer parents the opportunity to meet with Governors, myself and Leadership staff where the future Leadership of the College will be discussed.

Please be assured that the future of the College is in “safe hands” and we look forward to meeting with you to share our plans as we move into the new school.

Yours sincerely

Helen O’Sullivan
