Sophie Evans our Year 12 student returned to the College on Monday after her amazing performance in the BBC One show ‘’Over the Rainbow’’. The Saturday night show which saw Andrew Lloyd Webber search for his next West End star came to its conclusion on 22ndMay 2010 as Sophie tried her luck against Danielle Hope and Lauren Samuels. Sophie made it through to the final two, but narrowly lost out on the place of Dorothy to Danielle.
Both staff and students supported Sophie from start to finish, and were extremely excited to see her back in Tonypandy. Sophie was met with enormous applause and the whole College expressed its pure pride in what Sophie has achieved.
Mrs O’Sullivan said “Sophie performance during the competition and especially the final was outstanding, she proved herself to be an inspiration to all young people who aspire to fulfill their dreams. She has been a great ambassador for the Rhondda and for Tonypandy Community College. Everyone at the College has followed Sophie on this amazing journey, our lives have all been enriched by the experience, and we are so proud of what she has achieved. In our eyes she is a star. ”
We always knew Sophie had something special and audiences, both in the College and the wider community, have enjoyed her talent for many years.
Academically, Sophie has excelled in Drama, Music and Performing Arts at GCSE and AS level.
Mrs Martin Thomas Head of Performing Arts said “We are so proud of Sophie’s achievements; she is a winner in our eyes. I am delighted that the country has been able to see the talent that we as a College and community have enjoyed for many years. Sophie is a super star and we wait with excitement to see her soon on the West End stage”.
