It was a very busy afternoon of sport at the home of the ‘Zebras’ – Treorchy in the annual Year 9- RCT Schools Rugby 15’s Tournament.
With the eventual winner being chosen as Rhondda’s representative as District Qualifier in the Welsh Cup, there was clearly a lot to play for…
Tonypandy began the tournament against a tough Treorchy team. In a highly competitive game we lost 20-10 with two tries from captain Iestyn Edwards who showed a combination of pace and power to break the defensive line. Although the boys were disappointed not to win it was evident that we would be in good shape for the remaining games with lots of pace and skill from the backs and willing ball carriers within the forwards, Aarron Carr and Evan Davies with a particularly strong first game here.
In the second game we faced Ferndale and it was tries a plenty- Jamie Boundford, Kai Carnell, Iestyn Edwards x2, Cody Jones, Jack Johns and Seb Roles all scoring in a game which we won convincingly 40-5
In the final game we edged out Porth Comp 15-5 in a highly physical encounter in which many players stood up including Kai Carnell and Iestyn who were impressive in the tackle area. It was one outstanding try from Cody and two again from Iestyn which clinched the win and to make him the overall leading points scorer and a second place finish to Treorchy in the overall league table.
We look forward to next time!
