The Netball Academy has been running in Tonypandy now for three years and although the past two years have run pretty well, this year has by far been our most successful season.

This year unlike previous years, the girls that became part of the Academy were invited to join. The girls picked were not just good netballers but were girls that were committed, and could be relied on to train and play regularly.

The girls started the season with a trial to determine what team they would be in – either the A team or the B team and then we set to work, getting ready for the Sporting Marvels and Rhondda Schools Netball League.

The league consisted of 11 teams including our two teams. Both teams had some brilliant games and played really well, but by the end of the season our B team finished 5th in the league and our A team finished joined 1st with Cymmer. Both teams won 9 out of their 10 games but sadly Cymmer won the league on goal difference.

Although we were disappointed with missing out on the League Trophy we were determined to make every effort in the end of season tournament.

Both of our teams played really hard, and our A team managed to get to the semi final but sadly lost to Ferndale in a really close game.

But we did have something to celebrate at the end of the day, Lauren James, our Academy captain was awarded the Player of the Tournament, and Jess Evans was awarded with the overall player of the League 2013/2014 by being awarded the most Man of the Match votes throughout the season.

We really have had a fantastic season, and I am so proud of the efforts of the girls, and I’m very much looking forward to what they are going to achieve next year!
