On Thursday 7th July our keenest mathematicians in year 10 visited the University of South Wales, Treforest to attend a conference hosted by the Further Maths Support Programme.
Students were able to experience a taste of university lectures in topics ranging from civil engineering to number theory. Our students particularly enjoyed the opportunity to test game theory strategies in a tournament which tested their logic, negotiating skills and integrity.
The tournament was tense, and team “Trust” made of Tonypandy’s own mathematicians came second, demonstrating their ability to devise a successful strategy when playing a very famous game in the economic and computing industry known as “The Prisoners’ Dilemma”.
The day was packed full of snippets of applied mathematics and enlightened students on the possibilities that lay in their not too distant future.
10/Ma1 mathematics would like to thank First Campus for their financial contribution which made this trip possible. Thanks also to Alyson Downey of Further Maths Support Programme (Wales) for organising such an interesting and informative day for the students.”
