Academy football boys played in the WSFA Under 18’s Final on Sunday 9th May at the TNS 3G Football Pitch, Oswestry against Ysgol Brynrefail.

Tonypandy had done extremely well in the competition taking the scalps of Dyffrun school Newport, Bishop of Llandaff and St Cyres and were worthy finalists.

The venue was excellent and with travelling support for each team, there was plenty of atmosphere. Both teams were introduced to the playing field in a champion league style line up giving the boys a real sense of occasion.

Tonypandy got off to a nightmare start conceding a goal from a free kick, but quickly replied with a stunning header from captain Shaun Moss to level the game. The match was played at a frantic pace with quick goals being scored at either end leaving the half time score at 4 – 3 in favour of Ysgol Brynrefail.

Unfortunately, Tonypandy got off to the worst possible start in the second half. Captain and scorer of two of the Tonypandy goals, Shaun Moss was taken off the pitch by ambulance after a clash of heads. After a 30 minute break, Tonypandy struggled to maintain the pace they set in the first half.

Ysgol Brynrefail quickly capatalised and scored a further 4 goals. Ian Parsons scored a consolation goal making the final score 8 – 4.

Despite being upset and frustrated, the Tonypandy team gracious in defeat and accept it wasn’t to be their day. None the less, it was an amazing achievement to get to the final and hopefully they will be able one step further next year. Well done boys.
